#TeamWinchesterHospice Sahara Trek 2024

Our most challenging fundraiser yet…join us on our Sahara Trek as part of #TeamWinchesterHospice in November 2024!

Wednesday 6 November - Monday 11 November 2024

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as we trek the Moroccan Sahara together for Winchester Hospice! Explore the vast and diverse landscape and experience the Berber way of life as you spend two full days and two half days trekking across sand dunes, sun-baked plains and ancient dried up river beds.

The Sahara Trek

Together, our team will head out to trek 50km across the Sahara - you’ll be camping each night and be able to stargaze as you watch the night sky above! Enjoy chef-prepared meals of Moroccan cuisine, including an alfresco breakfast and lunch as well as local restaurant dining.

The terrain is mixture of hard, flat sundried plains, dried-up ancient riverbeds, wide sandy dune fields and hard rocky outcrops. In November, temperatures can range from 22°C to 27°C during the day and drop to around 0°C at night. However, historically the temperature has risen to 35°C!

The trip will be operated by Different Travel, a tour operator that specialises in overseas charity challenges and adventure holidays! More detailed information including FAQs on transport, medical information, climate and more can be found via the information brochure linked below and also on our trip provider’s website linked here.

Trip cost

The trip costs £375 which is payable at the time of booking. We then ask that you raise a total of £1,800 to support Winchester Hospice. 80% of this (£1,440) should be fundraised by 14 August 2024 with the remaining funds raised by the date of departure. There is also the option of self-funding your trip, which offers flexible payment.

Included is:

  • Return flights from the UK (inc. current taxes and fuel surcharges)

  • Transfers and transport in Morocco

  • Accommodation in hotels (2 nights)

  • Tents and sleeping mats on trek (3 nights)

  • All meals as specified

  • Local guides, camels and camel handlers on trek

  • Different Travel UK tour manager

The minimum age to take part in this trip is 18. It may be possible to participate if you are 16 or 17 years old but you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is no upper age limit! The ideal person to take on this trip would be fit, healthy and determined, open to adventure and adaptable to unexpected changes.

Places are limited on this trip so please do express your interest early so you don’t miss out!

Embark on an exciting adventure along the Camino de Santiago, where every step supports our hospice's mission of care and compassion!

saturday 20 september - saturday 27 september 2025

Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime experience as we explore the eighth and final section of the French Way, the most traditional and best known of all the pilgrims’ ways to Santiago de Compostela all in support of Winchester Hospice. During the 5-day walk we will traverse the hilly landscapes of Galicia, passing numerous points of cultural and historical interest along the way.

The Camino Trek

The terrain will vary throughout the 5 days but in general you will trek all day along country roads, compact dirt and stone footpaths, forest tracks, gravel trails, paved streets and through woods and meadows with some uphill/downhill paths. Each day you will experience undulating terrain, so it is important that your training includes hill walking and trekking up and down gradients!

The trip will be operated by Different Travel, a tour operator that specialises in overseas charity challenges and adventure holidays! More detailed information including FAQs on transport, medical information, climate and more can be found via the information brochure linked below and also on our trip provider’s website linked here.

Trip cost

A £365 registration fee is payable at the time of booking, then you are asked to fundraise at least £3,400 for Winchester Hospice. 80% (£2,720) is payable to Winchester Hospice by 27 June 2025. The remaining balance of £680 is due by the departure date. A flexi payment option, where you self-fund your trip costs and still fundraise for Winchester Hospice is also available.

Included is:

  • Return flights from the UK (inc. airport taxes)

  • Transfers and transport in Spain

  • Accommodation in hotels and guesthouses

  • All meals as specified

Winchester Purple Night Walk

TICKETS FOR THIS EVENT HAVE NOW HIT CAPACITY - WE ARE OVERWHELMED BY SUCH INCREDIBLE SUPPORT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Get ready to be part of something special. Join us on our first ever night walk as we stride through our city for Winchester Hospice!

The Winchester Purple Night Walk is a fun, vibrant 6km walk through south Winchester taking place on the evening of Saturday 14 October. The walk is open to all abilities and will take around an hour to complete - ideal to take part in with friends, family, colleagues or on your own!

Together, we'll dress up in purple and light up the night as we show our support for Winchester Hospice, the city’s only adult hospice providing palliative and end of life care to those with life-limiting illness.

Start venue: All Saints Church

Start time: 6:30

The route

This circular route will take you 6km from All Saints Church, towards Wharf Hill, round the outside of Wolvesey Castle grounds and then along the banks of the River Itchen. On our way we’ll pass the Hospital of St Cross as well as the Hockley Viaduct! On the home stretch we’ll walk by St Catherine’s Hill towards Bar End, finishing the route back at All Saints Church.

At the finish line, hot food will be available for you to purchase from a local food truck who will be ready and waiting for you at the end!

A good pair of trainers or walking boots are advised, as the route is a mixture of pavement and track.

At various points throughout the walk, there will be a number of marshals and volunteers! As well as our walk leader, they will be signposting where to go along the way and are there to ensure everyone's safety.

The cause

Winchester Hospice provides palliative and end of life care to those with life-limiting illness in and around Winchester. It is a place of compassion, understanding, warmth and support at the most difficult time – a place where our skilled staff support not only our patients, but their families, friends, carers and children too.

Our hospice is at the heart of the Winchester community and is a place made special through the care its staff provides and we yearn to be at the side of everyone who needs us, both now and in the future.

Through taking part in the Winchester Purple Night Walk, you're directly helping to ensure that our incredible staff can continue to be there for those that need them for years to come.

To find out more about ways to donate to Winchester Hospice Fundraising Charity, visit the link here.

Child: £5

Family of 4 (two adults, two children): £25

PLEASE NOTE:

For the safety of all of our participants, tickets are non-transferable and should not be re-sold. This is to ensure our team know exactly who is taking part on the night to protect everyone's safety and that the record we hold of expected attendees remains accurate for this purpose.

All funds raised from ticket sales support the important service we provide to patients with life-limiting illness here at Winchester Hospice and we thank you for supporting us.

Purchase your very own purple Winchester Hospice t-shirt for £6 by emailing winchester.hospice@hhft.nhs.uk!

  • A good pair of trainers or walking boots are advised, as the route is a mixture of pavement and track.

Dig out your brightest purple jumper or purchase one of our very own Winchester Hospice t-shirts on the day or in advance for £6! Flashing/glowing purple accessories are encouraged and will be available at the starting point!

Keep an eye on the weather on the run up to the event as you may need to bring a coat or jumper.

  • Only your biggest smile and a bottle of water! If you’re hoping to purchase purple merchandise at the start or food at the finish line, we’d recommend bringing a method of payment.

  • In the event of rain, we advise you grab your coat and umbrella and join us anyway! Don’t worry if you forget, our very own Winchester Hospice umbrellas will be available to purchase on the day too.

  • We take the safety of our participants seriously, therefore, there will be a number of marshals and volunteers at various points throughout the walk. As well as our walk leader, they will be signposting where to go along the way and are there to ensure everyone's safety. Please follow their instructions at all times and do not leave the walking route without informing one of our marshals or volunteers.

  • No, you don’t have to fundraise. Once you have bought your ticket, simply turn up in purple at the start location at the start time and you’ll be ready to go!

  • Yes! Although we do ask that they must be accompanied by an adult participant (age 18+) at all times.

  • Due to the walk terrain, we advise against bringing prams/buggies, whilst wheelchair users may find particular points along the route challenging due to gate entries along the way.

  • For the safety of all of our participants, tickets are non-transferable and should not be re-sold.

*CANCELLED* Spring Forward with Winchester Hospice

With regret, we have today decided to postpone our planned Spring Forward Walk on Saturday, March 26.

There was a lot of interest in the walk, but unfortunately this has not translated into the number of sign-ups that we need to make the event viable in terms of resources and fundraising generation.

Thank you to everyone who did sign up for the event, and we do hope to put it on later in the year or next year. In the meantime, there are plenty of other events that you can get involved with to support Winchester Hospice Fundraising Charity. Find out more by going to https://winchesterhospice.com/eventss

Thanks again for your ongoing support and we hope to see you at another Winchester Hospice Fundraising Charity Event soon.

Please join us on Saturday, March 26 for our Spring Forward with Winchester Hospice Fundraising Charity walk.

A 6k family and dog-friendly walk around the outskirts of Winchester, this is a wonderful chance to get fit, enjoy the great outdoors, and raise funds for Winchester Hospice Fundraising Charity.

Please bring along your own water bottles, and wear appropriate footwear for off-road terrain. Please note there is one small pinch point that double buggies may find difficult to traverse.

Entry cost: £10 per adult - £3.00 per child
Medals and a children’s trail are included in the entry fees.

Please book your tickets here.

If you have any questions, please email Winchester.hospice@hhft.nhs.uk. Please not that all adults are responsible for the safety and supervision of children in their groups.
